The amount and number of TDA Foundation scholarships varies in any given year dependent on the generous donation of sponsors, available funds, and qualified applicants. Selection of recipients is made by the TDA Foundation Executive Board based on criteria outlined in Bylaws and Standing Rules of the TDA Foundation.
Endowed Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded from the interest earned on invested funds and are available every year.
Austin Dietetic Association -
Students are either from Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas) or UT Austin alternating every year. Student must be a student member of the Austin Dietetic Association and RD/LD must be a member of the Austin Dietetic Association.
Betty Bohon Alford Scholarship -
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate attending Texas Woman's University (TWU). Betty and Joe Alford of Denton started this Endowed Scholarship in 2002. Dr. Betty Alford received her B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. from Texas Woman's University. After beginning her college teaching career at Baylor University, she returned to TWU to continue her career for over 40 years in teaching, research and administration. Dr. Alford has taught thousands of students over her distinguished career at TWU. She served as Nutrition Department Chair at TWU. She was 2000-01 TDA Foundation Director.
Big Country Dietetic Association - Celeste Rocap Scholarship -
Established in 1996 through the Big Country Dietetic Association, this memorial scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student who is from the Big Country area (counties include Nolan, Runnels, Coke, Sterling, Irion, Schleicher, Sutton, Stonewall, Haskell, Scurry, Fisher, Jones, Shackelford, Stephens, Eastland, Callahan, Taylor, Mitchell, Coleman, Brown, Tom Green, Concho, Kimble, Mason, Menard, McCullough, San Saba, Comanche) and is named in honor of a former TDA member who was a pioneer in the field of renal dietetics. At the time of her death, she was an ADA delegate from Texas.
Elmira Blecha Scholarship -
Awarded to an undergraduate student in his/her senior year. This endowed scholarship is in honor of a former member of TDA who dedicated her life to her profession and to helping potential dietitians. She was a former ADA Delegate and Education Director of the Dietetic Internship at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Fort Worth District Dietetic Association Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate, graduate/internship or dietetic technician who is enrolled at TCU, Tarrant County College or TWU only.
Houston Dietetic Association Scholarship -
The Houston Area Dietetic Association Endowed Scholarship is awarded to
an undergraduate or graduate student, with preference given to a student attending Texas Woman's University (Houston campus only), University of Houston, Texas Southern University, Veterans Administration Internship, UT School of Public Health, San Jacinto Community College, or Prairie View A&M University. Established in 2005, the scholarship was endowed through the efforts of Houston dietitians to support students in nutrition. In 2006, HADA became the first district to increase the endowment to $20,000 which will allow $1000 to be given annually to a deserving Houston area student or intern.
Jane Elizabeth Watkins Cohen Nutrition Education Scholarship -
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate to assist with a nutrition education activity as a part of a community nutrition class, a peer education activity with other students on campus or a 4-H youth group, a research project or special problems class on nutrition education or a similar nutrition education event. Preference given to student from Navarro or Brazos County and attending TAMU, NTSU, NC, TTU, TWU, SHSU (in that order). Established in 2001 as the first $1000 endowed scholarship by Jane Elizabeth Watkins Cohen, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., and her husband, Robert S. Cohen, Ph.D., of College Station. Some of Dr. Cohen's positions over 25 years with Texas A&M University included: 1) Expanded Nutrition Program Specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and 2) Health Education Coordinator and Nutrition Specialist at Beutel Health Center. She was 2001-03 TDA Foundation Director, 2001 TDA Distinguished Dietitian, and received the 1997 American Dietetic Association Anita Owen Award for Innovative Nutrition Education for the Public.
Joan J. Coleman Scholarship -
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student with preference given to student attending Abilene Christian University or Lubbock Christian University. Dr. Joan J. Coleman of Dumas, Texas, donated funds for this endowed scholarship.
Kennon Moffitt Anniversary Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to graduate, internship, or undergraduate student at any institutuion. Preference will be given to a managment student.
Lane Research Scholarship -
Awarded to an undergraduate, graduate, or a non degree dietitian who is a Texas resident and who is or is pursuing becoming a registered dietitian. The scholarship is to provide funding to assist the student's training in nutrition research in food science and technology, clinical or community dietetics, food service or nutritional biochemistry. Dr. Helen Lane of Houston, Texas provided initial funds to established this endowment in 1999. Dr. Lane serves as a dietitian with NASA. Others are encouraged to contribute to this endowment in support of nutrition research.
Lubbock Dietetic Association -
The Lubbock District Dietetic Association is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student, with preference given to a student attending Texas Tech University. Fully endowed in October 2003, the scholarship was endowed through long term efforts of Lydia Kloiber and March 2003 Fun Run Chair Gina Jarman, with Janet Basom as District President when the grant was secured.
Mozelle Craddock Scholarship -
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate nutrition student, this endowed scholarship is in honor of a former member of TDA who dedicated her life to the teaching and training of dietitians. She taught at Texas Woman's University and Texas Tech University.
San Antonio Dietetic Association Scholarship -
The San Antonio District Dietetic Association Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student, with preference given to a student in Bexar County, from the South Central Texas area, or from Bexar area attending another university. Established in January 2003, the scholarship was endowed through the efforts of dietitians to support students.
When endowed, Beth Zimbicki was District President, Tatjana Walker was District Scholarship Chair, Celeste Carpenter was District Treasurer and Danna Malone was TDA Past President.
West Texas Dietetic Association - Miriam Curry Scholarship -
The West Texas District Dietetic Association - Miriam Curry Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student, with preference given to a student attending Texas Tech University, a student from the WTDA area or a West Texas resident, active in the community, and has an outgoing flamboyant personality. Miriam, a beloved member of TDA and ADA, was a founding member of the West Texas Dietetic Association. She served twice as district president, as TDA president, a three term delegate, and continuously on the TDA Board in a variety of positions for more than 30 years. She has been actively involved with the ADA Dietetic Practice Group, Nutrition Education for the Public, since 1983, and started their first newsletter. When recognized as a 50 year ADA member in 1994, she was still working full time in the Consumer Services Division of the Associated Milk Producers, Inc., a position she held from 1971 to 1995. Miriam was honored as Texas Distinguished Dietitian in 1988. The West Texas District Dietetic Association - Miriam Curry was fully endowed with the help of the Texas Dietetic Association Foundation in 2003.
